— Merriam Webster dictionary

I first heard about the concept of hygge a few years ago when it was trending across the internet. Who doesn’t love to be cozy and comfy? What a brilliant practice to include in our daily lives! When I think of hygge, I think of curling up on the above couch. I would have a book or a my switch in hand playing a cozy game.

Winter is the picture of hygge to me. It’s chilly outside and makes one want to stay cozy and warm inside. After playing in the snow, come on in for a mug of hot cocoa. Enjoy grilled cheese and soup. Wear flannel pajamas and fuzzy socks while sitting in front of the fireplace. There are so many comforting, cozy things that can be done all year around. Here are some ideas for the winter season.

  • Bring natural elements like pine cones or spruce twigs inside – use them as decor
  • Go sledding or ice skating
  • Enjoy seasonal scents such as oranges, balsam fir, cinnamon, or gingerbread
  • Have a charcouterie board picnic in front of the fireplace
  • Transform your bathroom into a spa with candles, scented bath salts and soaps
  • Wear flannels and fuzzy socks or slippers
  • Take up journaling for self-reflection and dreaming
  • Practice your snow photography skills
  • Read by candlelight
  • Stay in your pajamas all day
  • View the clear winter night sky and spot constellations

I am not a winter person. I don’t like the freezing cold or getting wet. But after living in northern Michigan for over 15 years now I have learned how to dress for winter. But I especially love all the coziness of being inside and watching fluffy snowflakes falling.

Save it!
